Guidance Notes for Young People

Remember that ALL courses are FREE to 16 to 18 year olds.

Step 1 - Ask for Course Information, Advice & Guidance

Look through the courses on this website. If you require a printed version of any of our Course Guides to be sent to you, please request a copy via our Course Guide & Information Pack Request Form.

We can help provide you with more information and advice on choosing a suitable course for you. Please feel free to telephone our Call Centre on 0845 207 8220 for a personal and friendly response to your course queries or drop in to your nearest SKC Student Centre. Details of how to find us can be found in our 'At Our College' section.

If you would like further impartial and confidential guidance or welfare advice you can contact one of our SKC Student Centres to make an appointment with a Guidance or Welfare Adviser. Further information about the guidance and support available to you can be found in our 'At Our College' section.

If you have not applied for a course by August (for September enrolments) or December (for January enrolments) it is not too late! We are open all Summer!

Step 2 - Complete & Post Your Application Form

We encourage you to apply for a course as early as possible. Using the application form, please complete the details of the course/s for which you wish to apply.

You can apply for more than one course on one application form. If you need help with completing the form, a South Kent College Adviser, your careers teacher or a Connexions Careers Adviser will be pleased to assist you.

Fold the application form into an envelope and post (no stamp required for UK residents) to:

Admissions

FREEPOST

or drop it into ANY one of our Student Centres. It does not have to be sent to the campus you have chosen to study at.

Please do not send payment with your application form.

Step 3 - Receipt of Application

You will be sent an acknowledgment postcard from the Admissions Team, confirming that we have received your Application Form. Our Guidance team will check your application and if necessary contact you to arrange a guidance appointment to discuss your application choices further.

Step 4 - Invitation to Interview

For the majority of applications our Admissions Team will send out a letter with a time and date inviting you to interview. Many of our part-time courses however do not require an interview. If the time and date is not suitable please contact us to make an alternative interview. It is a firm appointment unless you contact us.

Your application is then passed on to the relevant Department/subject area of the College to which you are applying. If you have not received a letter within a month of your application acknowledgement then please call your local Student Centre.

Step 5 - Your Interview

If you need to attend an interview for your course, this will be an opportunity for you to talk about why you wish to join the course and what interests you (maybe showing samples of any previous work). You will be advised as to what you need to bring with you in the letter. You'll receive more information on the course and about the College facilities from the tutors and lecturer/s, as well as a chance to ask us questions. We can make sure you are on the right course for you.

Step 6 - An Offer and Acceptance

Whether or not you are required to attend an interview, you will then be sent a letter stating whether you have been given a conditional or unconditional offer of a place on your chosen course. For example, an offer of a place may be on the condition that you obtain certain grades for your GCSEs.

You will be asked to send back confirmation of your acceptance of this offer. To secure your place on the course, please respond to this within 14 days of receipt. This will put you in the best position to guarantee your place, however, applications will be considered later than this. If you have any queries please contact the person/department on your interview letter regarding the application at this stage.

If your offer is subject to certain grades and you do not achieve these, please still contact us to discuss alternative options for you. We can still help you find a suitable course that meets your needs and career aspirations.

Step 7 - Enrolling

Details of when you will need to enrol on the course and confirmation of days/times of your course will then be sent to you nearer to the start date for the course. Full time courses usually start in the first week of September and some in the first and second week in January. If you have not been invited in at a specific time for enrolment, you can drop in during our advertised Enrolment Days in August/September or December/January.
