The Diploma at South Kent College
The Diplomas are exciting new national qualifications designed with schools, colleges, universities, awarding bodies and employers to broaden the choice of courses for 14-19 year-olds. Diplomas are based around employment sectors at 3 different levels, and give young people an insight into a range of potential careers.
Diplomas are offered at 3 different levels:
- Foundation Diploma (Level 1): Students will study for 1 year and gain the equivalent of 5 GCSEs at grade D-G.
- Higher Diploma (Level 2): Students will study for 1 year and gain the equivalent of 7 GCSEs at grade A*-C.
- Advanced Diploma (Level 3): Students will study for a further 2 years and gain the equivalent of 3.5 A-Levels.
Diplomas at all levels will include:
- Principal learning: this is the core subject(s) that students will study in their chosen area of study.
- Functional skills: English, maths and I.C.T. are essential to succeed in any chosen sector.
- Work experience: All students will have the opportunity to do at least 10 days’ work experience.
- Student project: This will demonstrate the skills and knowledge learnt. This could be a written piece of work, like a report or an investigation, or a practical piece of work, like a website, a video or a performance.
The Diploma gives young people the choice to progress onto the next level, directly into employment or higher education and provides them with functional, personal and transferable skills that are welcomed by employers, colleges and universities.
Diploma in Society, Health and Development
The society, health and development sector accounts for 15% of the entire UK workforce. It includes the NHS, child care, teaching, youth workers, play workers, the health industry, community officers, police officers, adult social workers, care workers, etc.

Diploma in Construction
The construction and built environment industry is one of the largest and most important economic sectors in the U.K., employing more than 2 million people, which includes: architecture, surveying, bricklaying, painting and decorating, electrical, heating and ventilation, etc.

Diploma in Information Technology
The British I.T. industry is a fast-growing and ever-advancing sector, with huge growth rates to contemplate. Qualified people are wanted every year to fill new and diverse positions.

Diploma in Creative and Media
Britain has a very strong position worldwide in the creative industries which have grown at twice the rate of the economy and comprise: advertising, media, music, fine arts, performing arts, computer games, 2D/3D animation, fashion, etc.
