Childcare Students at South Kent College

From left to right, Jade Hart, Francesca Tonolini, Katie Neve, lecturer, Sonia McPherson, Sophie Malkin and Sian Corbett (behind). All five students have excelled on the course. Early Years lecturer and course leader for school links, Sonia McPherson said: 'Here at South Kent College, they just settle and get involved in their work. Doing one day's work experience before they come into college the next day helps them analyse what they've seen and what they might do differently. They are such a good group because they genuinely want to be here and it has really captured their attention.'

School Day Release Leads to Distinctions for Five Teenagers

Five pupils from Pent Valley Technology College in Folkestone have been allowed out of classes for two days every week - with the full approval of their teachers - and it's led them to distinctions in their child care studies.

The teenagers who are studying for their Foundation Award in Caring for Children go out to work placements at nurseries every Thursday, and then attend South Kent College's Folkestone campus on Fridays.

They're impressing the people they work for, their teachers and College staff, as well as enjoying their studies and progressing. Sian Corbett, 15, from Folkestone, who works with children with learning difficulties, said: 'I learned how to use sign language and I wanted to work where I could use it because it can be challenging. Using it means I can talk to them. I'd like to be a midwife or a signing teacher.'

Katy Tibbles, Vocational Work Related leader at Pent Valley Technology College, said: 'We offer diverse and personalised curriculum opportunities to encourage and support students that have a clear idea of their vocation in life.'

All five girls hope to continue their studies and progress into careers involving babies and young children.
