Katie and Amy begin the draw.

Katie Butler (left) and Amy Sheather from Barclays bank begin the Big Draw. Amy thought the fund raising was ideal for the bank's 'pound for pound' scheme, so doubled the amount raised to £1150. Now Katie has heard from the Odyssey Project Director, Hugo Iffla, who described the College rafffle as 'brilliant'. He said: 'We are struggling with funding (as are other charities), so this makes a huge difference.' There will be a formal cheque presentation in February 2010.

Grand Draw Doubles its Money in Memory of Michele

After Michele Ashton, Additional Support Facilitator at Ashford, died from cancer in September 2009, staff at South Kent College's Ashford Learning Centre decided to do something positive in her memory.

Katie Butler, Senior Learning Advisor, said: 'We decided to have "The Big Raffle" and my target was to sell a hundred tickets and have about ten prizes. Tickets cost 20 pence each or a strip of 5 for £1, so you can imagine amazing it is to have sold 1,500 to staff and students.'

Prizes for the draw were donated and included vast quantities of chocolate and sweets, as well as DVDs, books, jewellery, cuddly toys and grooming products. It took nearly two hours to complete the Draw as there were so many prizes.

The organisors decided to give the money to the charity, Odyssey, which enhances the lives of people with cancer through outdoor activities. Katie said: 'Michele was lucky enough to attend an event organised by them and received a great deal of support, gaining a real inner strength and positive attitude that stayed with her throughout her subsequent treatments. Michele was such a positive and inspirational person and her spirit has definitely lived on in all her friends, colleagues and students at South Kent College.'
