Vocational Courses at SKC

What is the benefit of a vocational course?

Vocational courses allow you to follow a career or job related route to getting to your chosen path. All courses in this section are full-time courses - this means that you will attend an SKC college campus for an average of 3 days per week. This allows you to work part-time if necessary or undertake work placements relevant to your course.

Can I really choose a course that is equivalent to 3 A Levels?

Yes - any course which you find in our Courses section that is highlighted as a LEVEL 3 course will give you the same opportunities as studying for A Levels and allow you to progress onto a relevant Higher Education qualification at SKC or University. These are usually BTEC National Diplomas or GNVQ Advanced qualifications.

What if I have difficulties with learning or didn't get good GCSE results?

We offer vocational courses at all levels from Basic Level to Level 3 for 16-18 year olds. We also offer full time courses that provide you with an introduction to College life and help you gain skills for work. You can later progress onto other vocational courses at a time that suits you. If you feel that you need to improve your maths or English skills or have difficulty with reading or numbers we can also help you with this before starting on a vocational full time course. Visit our 'Skills for Life' section.

How will College be different to school?

The move from school to college can seem quite a big step. You no longer have to study - it is your choice. You will be treated as an adult and have more freedom than ever before. As part of your studies, you will be expected to spend time in independent study and research as well as in classes. Your personal tutor will help you find the best way to study and learn. Using the Learning Centre can help you become a confident, independent learner. There may be days that you do not have to attend college, when you can study or work part-time. Your schedule will be much more flexible. All South Kent College expects from you is that you turn up to classes on time, ready to learn - and most of all, enjoy learning!
