The Most Talked-About Exhibit - The Bride Wore Nappies!

[Posted on: 23-Jun-2010]

The show-stopping exhibit at the Ashford School of Art and Design End of Year Show at the Henwood Campus in Ashford was a wedding dress made of disposable nappies!

Teacher, Gemma Johnson, of Teynham near Faversham, said her artwork was inspired by the mundane. Mrs Johnson, who has just completed a two year HND course and starts her BA course in September, said: 'We bring up our children to believe in a fantasy and it's not reality - the daily chores are real life and that's what I was exploring.'

Hundreds of visitors to the Show opening enjoyed champagne and strawberries, and, thanks to the Principal of the newly merged South and West Kent Colleges, Bill Fearon, were also able to monitor the England football team's progress on a TV screen installed especially.

In his speech opening the event, Mr Fearon, said he wasn't remotely interested in football - before suggesting specific ideas to improve England's performance, which many fans felt should have been taken up having seen the final score!

Mr Fearon praised the quality of work by students. 'The standard of art is fabulous, showing an enormous diversity, some I find very attractive.' He went on to lead students in a round of applause to show their appreciation for their tutors and staff and urged visitors to watch and see how much more could be achieved now that South and West Kent Colleges have merged.

For the 5th year, fashion students held two catwalk shows in a marquee at the opening event, showcasing their original designs, modelled by friends and relatives with hair and make up by South Kent College students.
